Students majoring in some area of earth science develop numerous valuable and transferable skills. The following represent the most critical to graduates.

Problem-Solving. One of the most important skills for earth scientists, this is the ability to identify complex problems, review existing conditions and restrictions, and develop and evaluate alternative solutions to the problem.

Creativity. This skill involves brainstorming innovative solutions to ongoing environmental issues, developing specific plans to implement the solutions, and modifying the plans as needed.

Scientific Method. All science majors must understand the scientific method, which involves the formulation of a hypothesis concerning some phenomena, experimentation to demonstrate the truth or fallacy of the hypothesis, and a conclusion that validates or modifies the hypothesis.

Communications (in writing and verbally). All majors must perfect the following critical skills: the ability to report and present the results of your scientific research, to develop educational and informative literature, and to be persuasive when speaking with a group.
